A Starry Night with Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night is one of the most well known pieces of art in the world. That is why I chose to make this the first post to my blog. This piece of art has been copied throughout the world and now it is possible to get everything from a poster to phone cover with the print of Starry Night on it. It is even possible to buy underwear and shoes with the print of Starry Night on it, I'm a bigger art nerd than people know and I might consider buying these (pst don't tell anybody). What is the story behind this painting and what sparked the creation of a piece we put everywhere from on our walls to the most private places.

Starry Night was painted in 1889 while Van Gogh was at an asylum in Saint-Remy. He claimed "One of the most beautiful things about painters of this century has been the painting of darkness that is still color." This was wrote to his brother Theo. Theo his brother was an art dealer and was the person Van Gogh would send his paintings to while he was in the asylum. Theo had a hard time ever selling Van Gogh's paintings and thought this was okay because his thought was painting which are popular now will not be popular forever. This insisted Van Gogh's paintings would be popular forever because they were not popular when he was still alive. This seems to be the case with many artists before the 20th century, the artists and their paintings were not well known and the artists were very poor. Van Gogh  began to hallucinate in 1888, one year before he would paint Starry Night, and spent a few years in asylums. The painting Starry Night was while he was in an asylum, and it is what he saw out of his barred windows. He was very determined on his work while in the asylums. He would be let out of the Saint- Remy asylum inn 1890 and would later take his own life in 1890. His last painting would be Wheat Field with Crows. One of my favorite things about Van Gogh's paintings are how mysterious they are with the dreamlike qualities. There is something to them that sets them apart from real life paintings. He knew he was doing this also and he also knew he was going mad. This makes me question why some of the best art came from a man during his time of going mentally ill. I could sit and wonder this for days, but I might go mad so I won't. These paintings are just as mysterious as they are beautiful.

Title: Wheat Field with Crows. Would be his last paitning.
A painting of a Cafe
Sunflowers
Irises

I leave you, the reader, with just a few questions to ask yourself.
What is it int his painting which catches your eye and draws you in?
What does it make you wonder about? Afterall the techniques used to paint these were suppose to evoke mystery and seem almost dream like.
Why do we crave to know the mysteries of life?
Are these paintings just supposed to show us a piece of the mystery of life?
